SlimStampen is an adaptive learning system that makes learning ready knowledge faster and simpler. Our system creates a computer model of the memory for each user and uses it to determine the optimal learning process for everyone.
The SlimStampen method is based on scientific research in cognitive psychology. Several studies show that learning with SlimStampen leads to better results compared to non-adaptive learning methods: efficiency increases up to 10% (van Rijn et al., 2009; Sense et al., 2016). This way, students never spend more time learning ready knowledge than necessary.
Because the system creates a computer model of each student's memory, it can estimate very accurately which information the student has mastered sufficiently (Sense et al., 2016). This allows SlimStampen to supplement or replace traditional tests.
Maintaining learning data in an internal computer model
For each student, SlimStampen creates a computer model of memory. While learning with SlimStampen, the system measures how fast and how accurate the user's responses are. Responses during learning are used to build an intelligent computer model of the learners' memory.
The faster a student can give a correct answer, the better the student knows a fact. When someone knows a fact better, the fact has a higher activation in memory. In other words, an active fact is faster and more easily retrieved from memory.
For fast, correct answers, the student is more likely to remember the fact, but for incorrect or slow answers, this likelihood is lower.
Repeat information when you are about to forget it
Facts that a user does not yet know very well are repeated faster and more frequently by the SlimStampen system than facts that the user has successfully memorized. The best moment of repetition is determined for each question. This results in a learning process that is optimal for each individual user.

If the activation of a fact in memory (red line) is high, there is a good chance that the student will be able to reproduce the fact well immediately afterwards.
After the first time a fact has been learned, the activation in memory drops rapidly, because the student does not yet know the fact very well. After a while, the student has forgotten the fact. The more often the fact is repeated (black dots), the longer it takes the student to forget the fact.
The SlimStampen algorithm estimates and adjusts the “rate-of-forgetting” by measuring student reaction times. Then SlimStampen presents facts just before the learner will forget the facts. This results in optimal learning efficiency.

Different learning parameters are summarized in one measure: the mastery credit. If a student has obtained a mastery credit, there is a good chance that the student will not forget the materials. SlimStampen thus provides better insight into the knowledge level of the student than a traditional test.
Users can also view their own statistics. For example, SlimStampen keeps track of how well a student already knows each word, users receive an overview of the learning session at the end of the lesson, and users can always review how previous learning sessions went.
